The City of Sydney is investing an extra $26 million on major projects that will improve connections and public spaces across the city’s east over the next 10 years.
Projects include safer and more accessible streets and pedestrian walkways, upgraded community centres and playgrounds, and the construction of a cycleway linking the city centre to Bondi Junction.
The projects come as part of a $1.7 billion package the City has set aside for building and construction over the next 10 years. Nearly 400 projects will provide new and renovated facilities for communities and businesses across the City of Sydney area.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the City had delivered hundreds of important projects including parks, playgrounds, childcare, pools, libraries, theatres and community and cultural spaces over the last 10 years, and was working on hundreds more for Sydneysiders to enjoy into the future.
Some of the major projects being funded and delivered in the City’s east over the next 10 years include:
- $11.3 million for the Bondi Junction to city centre cycleway
- $0.5 million for the Elizabeth McCrae playground upgrade
- $1.8 million for public domain upgrades at the intersection of Burton and Palmer streets
- $7.2 million for the Victoria Street Woolloomooloo trunk drain
- $0.25 million for the upgrade of the Reginald Murphy Activity Centre.
“We’re improving the public domain at the intersection of Burton and Palmer streets, upgrading Elizabeth McCrea playground and completing the next stages of the Foley Street upgrade,” the Lord Mayor said.
“State-of-the-art community facilities and infrastructure projects will help create more welcoming and connected neighbourhoods that meet the needs of our growing population of families and workers.
“We’re improving connectivity in Sydney’s east by working with the NSW Government to build a safe separated bike lane linking the Centennial Park cycleway with Surry Hills. Our population is growing fast, and more and more people are choosing to travel to and from work by bike – so it’s incredibly important we build separated cycleways to reduce congestion and ensure everyone can commute safely.
“We’re investing $8 million in additional funding over the next decade to increase Sydney’s street tree canopy and help reach our target of increasing the urban canopy by 50 per cent by 2030.
“Our 10-year financial plan is a huge investment that will enhance the city’s liveability, boost the economy, encourage tourism, improve sustainability, create new public open spaces and enhance our cultural life.”
The 10-year corporate plan includes more than 400 projects across the City of Sydney local area. Among the major city-wide projects to be delivered over the next 10 years are:
- $330 million for public domain improvements, including footpaths, roadways and paving
- $289 million to upgrade the City’s parks and green spaces
- $55 million on cycleways, providing cycling connections between important destinations
- $21 million on public art, including a major new work to honour the Eora peoples
- $8 million to increase Sydney’s street tree canopy and reduce the damaging heat island effect.
